Controlled Burn

Tuesday, June 9th, Franklinville Firefighters, students from the RCC Fire Academy, and the NC Forestry Service conducted a controlled burn of approximately 10 acres.
Controlled burns are an important land management tool that help reduce hazardous fuel buildup, lower the risk of uncontrolled wildfires, improve wildlife habitat, recycle nutrients back into the soil, and promote healthier forest and grassland ecosystems.
This was also invaluable training for new fire recruits. It gave them the opportunity to experience live fire behavior in a controlled environment, observe how wind, terrain, and fuel conditions affect fire spread, and practice safe wildfire suppression tactics alongside experienced firefighters and forestry personnel.
Training opportunities like this help prepare the next generation of firefighters to respond safely and effectively when real emergencies occur.
